The instructors are: --Tran V. Muoi, PhD, President, Optical Communication Products --Del Hanson, PhD, Principal Engineer, Hewlett-Packard --Richard E. Wagner, PhD, District Manager, Bellcore This course offers a review of optical fiber communications fundamentals, then focuses on state-of-the-art technology and its applications in present and future communication networks. The course begins with the major building blocks of optical fiber communications systems ( fiber and passive components, sources and transmitters, detectors and receivers). Actual design examples of fiber optic links for short-haul and long-haul applications are studied, and recent technological advances in addressing problems due to fiber loss and dispersion are presented. The impact of fiber optic technology on communications is highlighted in the latter half of the course. Recent developments in local and metropolitan area networks to support multimedia traffic (i.e., data, voice, and video) and their evolving architectures and standards are fully covered. The treatment on telecommunications systems includes various technological options for subscriber networks, exchange networks, and the global undersea networks. Network architectures evolving from the traditional telephone and CATV networks are contrasted. Technology trends and directions for realizing the so-called information superhighway are examined as well. Finally, optical networks using wavelength routing and multi-wavelength cross-connects are presented. The course fee is $1,295 which includes extensive course materials. The theme of the Conference this year is Information Sharing, Software Development and Application Solutions over Global Networks. The conference will be exploiting tools and research results of collaborative computing to make the transition from conventional conference to an electronic conference a quality and enjoyable one. The program will be consisting of keynote speech, invited papers and contributed papers all available during that week by accessing GISSIC conference nodes directly or via requests to conference program chairperson or session chairpersons. Only registered members will be permitted to access the conference papers (a registrant roster will be kept on file). Papers will be accessible during specific times. Authors of accepted papers are given specific time slots to receive questions and comments (limited to 1 KB) and append responses to their papers (limited to a total of 10 KB). Each session will store all its papers and Q and A's in one node server. More information about the format and other details can be found in http://quasar.poly.edu/~llin/GISS. Registration fee for the conference is $20 prior to August 1, 1995 and a late charge will be added for late registration. Send check payable to GCSD-GISS to: 3 Louis Drive Katonah, NY 10536. Different-time/ different-place/different-culture teams will become the norm. Same- time/same-place/same-culture workgroups will become the exception. The International Office of the Future (IOF) will be a dramatically different environment than that which exists in the majority of today's organizations. The purpose of this conference is to provide a forum and prototype environment in which researchers and practitioners can interact. Electronic meeting technologies and facilities will be available for participant use and evaluation. Specific topics include: multi- cultural team productivity, IT platform requirements, global telecommunications, effective use of Internet and the information highway, IS infrastructure, business systems and processes, and social/political implications. You are invited to submit a paper or a proposal for a panel discussion. Papers should be original and unpublished elsewhere. Four printed copies of your reviewing draft, which should not exceed 18 standard single-spaced A4 pages, will be required for the blind reviewing process. Or you may prefer to e-mail an ASCII, uuencoded RTF, latex or postscript copy to vogel@bpa.arizona.edu. But no fax copies please. Panel proposals should include a 1-2 page summary including names and affiliations of panellists who have agreed to participate.
