Title:Arthur P. Mange Photograph Collection
Dates: 1965-2010
Abstract: Arthur Mange taught in the Biology Department at University of Massachusetts Amherst for 31 years before retiring in 1995. He is the co-author of four books on human genetics, served on a number of Town of Amherst committees, and remains on the committee that administers the Burnett Gallery at the Jones Library in Amherst Center. He has taken tens of thousands of 35mm black and white film photographs over the course of 50 years, and processes them entirely by himself from developing the film to framing the finished prints. Publich exhibits (solo or group shows) have been in Amherst,Hadley, Pelham, Leverett, Easthampton, Southampton, Northampton, Springfield, and Boston. The subjects have been varied--whatever Mange thinks would make good black and white pictures. The locales have also varied, from many places in the United States and from half a dozen foreign countries. Presented in this collection are his best images from New England and New York.

Arthur Mange joined the Zoology Department (later the Biology Department) at the University of Massachusetts from the Midwest in 1964. He taught primarily genetics and with his wife, Elaine, co-authored several award-winning college textbooks of human genetics. Following retirement in 1997, he served on a number of committees in Amherst, including chair of the Conservation Commission, and currently serves on the Committee for the Burnett Gallery at the Jones Library in Amherst. Mange is a member of the Pioneer Valley Photographic Artists, whose members are dedicated to fine art photography. This group maintains rotating exhibits at the Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, Bay State Hospital in Springfield, and the Nashawannuck Gallery in Easthampton.

For over half a century, Mange has taken thousands of black and white photographs of varied subjects. The pictures are from many places around the world, with about half of them from New England and the East coast. Like many photographers, Mange tries to present interesting (if possible unusual or artful), real-life images with nice composition, form, texture, and resolution. They faithfully record things that have caught his eye along the way.

Mange has participated in a score of solo or group photo shows at hospitals, libraries, banks, and other sites in Amherst, Northampton, Pelham, Hadley, Leverett, and Southampton. The subject of these shows have included mysterious images including close-ups, gravestones, plants and animals, architecture, local sights, windows, pictures taken looking down, whimsical signs, and travel pictures.

Arthur Mange's collection of photographs consists of 339 images taken from 1965 to 2010. His subjects vary widely, from scenes around New England and New York City to scenes captured more locally from Amherst and Hadley to New Salem. Common themes include studies of nature, buildings, patterns, whimsical signs, attention-grabbing shadows, and gravestones.

Mange has used a number of single-lens reflex cameras over the years and 35mm black and white film on multi-grade luster-surface RC papers, with hardly any alterations except cropping and burning some unwanted highlighted areas. As of 2011, Mange has approximately 35,000 35mm negatives of his work; from these he has printed around 2,500.

65A-08Snow on sumac, 43 Canton Ave. 1965

Keywords:Climate; winter.

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

1964-1965 was our first winter in Amherst. It had been a lot colder and snowier in the upper Midwest from whence we came.

67G-05Yellow pond lily pinheads 1967

Keywords: Plant, water.

Location: Stinson Lake, New Hampshire.

For five summers (1966-1970), we rented for several weeks a funky cottage on Stinson Lake in the White Mountains. Grandparents, parents, kids, and guests all slept on one screened porch.

67I-02"Ebenezer" and "Rachel Currier" 1967

Keywords: Gravestone, names.

Location: Stinson Lake, New Hampshire.

This graveyard was not kept up at the time, but when we visited this spot in 2002, a local family had taken upon itself the task of cleaning it up and making it less photogenic.

68C-20Spinulose fern with shadows (view A) 1968

Keywords: Plant, fern.

Location: Stinson Lake, New Hampshire.

The sun-dappled woods around Stinson Lake were a delight.

68E-31Worked wooden puzzle (reverse side) 1968

Keywords: Pattern, puzzle.

Location: Stinson Lake, New Hampshire.

The deceased husband of the woman who rented us the Stinson Lake cottage had loved to make these intricate plywood jigsaw puzzles, which were available to renters. The puzzle is seen from the back side.

68G-20Elaine and kids framed by barn beams 1968

Keywords: Family; Elaine, Jennifer, Steven, Paul.

Location: Stinson Lake, New Hampshire.

This shot at an abandoned barn is one of our favorite family pictures in which each person expresses his or her own personality: From the upper left, Jennifer is a bit bored; Steven ponders the meaning of life; Paul hams it up; Mother is very pleased.

68H-20AFrog on boat gunnel 1968

Keywords: Animal, frog

Location: Stinson Lake, New Hampshire.

This animal with the big round ear posed on a small pond above Stinson Lake. The boat just seemed to be there for general use. With me at the time was Stan Moss (Psychology Department) who was fishing from the shore.

68P-14Three moths on screen 1968

Keywords: Animal, moth

Location: Stinson Lake, New Hampshire.

On our rented cabin on the shores of Stinson Lake.

68P-19Spider with lace curtain background 1968

Keywords: Animal, spider.

Location: Stinson Lake, New Hampshire.

The spider is on the sill outside; the curtain is inside.

68P-32Spinulose fern with strong shadows 1968

Keywords: Plant, fern.

Location: Stinson Lake, New Hampshire.

Finding a photogenic plant in the sun was always a special happening.

68P-34Red maple sapling 1968

Keywords: Plant, tree.

Location: Stinson Lake, New Hampshire.

I couldn't get enough of sunlight playing on the undergrowth.

69I-31ACinnamon fern with rain droplets 1969

Keywords: Plant, fern.

Location: Stinson Lake, New Hampshire.

After a rain was always a favorite time to wander around.

73E-18ARaindrops on Pond, Arrowhead 1973

Just as it started to rain in Arnold Arboretum.

73R-01Nasturtium with raindrop, 160 Gray St. 1973

Keywords: Plant, grass.

Location: Amherst, Massachusettes.

Gardeners know that nasturtium thrives on neglect - here in our front yard. Again, I am wandering around after a rain.

73S-14Bottle [1] at Sandwich Glass Museum 1973

Keywords: Arts, musuem.

Location: Sandwich, Massachusettes.

This bottle of Sandwich Glass sat on a shelf against a window.

73S-15Bottle [2] at Sandwich Glass Museum 1973

Keywords: Arts, musuem.

Location: Sandwich, Massachusettes.

As for 73S-14, this bottle was lit just by sunlight through the window.

75A-13Cattails along Tan Brook, near high school 1975

Keywords: Climate, winter.

Location: Amherst, Massachusettes.

Tan Brook used to meander through the cow pasture where the Amherst Middle School now stands. The stream makes a 100-yard above- ground appearance behind the Regional High School. Then on Triangle Street there is a curious sign that says "Tan Brook," which may or may not refer to a little ditch by the west side of the road.

75K-37Ithamar Conkey House, Main St. (view C) 1975

Keywords: Building, run-down.

Location: Amherst, Massachusettes.

Mr. Conkey (1823-1875), a lawyer, was moderator of Amherst Town Meeting for a record-setting 26 years. He founded Amherst Savings Bank, and was active in the Ornamental Tree Association, which planted many trees on the Town Common. In 1975 the very large Victorian house was occupied by just one elderly woman. It is now spruced up and divided into offices.

75P-24Marginal shield fern & shadow 1975

Keywords: Plant, fern.

Location: Amherst, Massachusettes.

Like the undergrowth at Stinson Lake, this fern occupied a small sunny spot in the woods. We were on a boat trip sponsored by Northfield Mountain Pumped Storage Facility. Although I have been known to move a rock or bend a stem for photographic purposes, this scene is 100% natural.

76F-26Sun-slash in Gardner Museum 1976

Keywords: Building, museum

Location:Boston, Massachusettes.

The woman seated on the upper floor is a nice point of interest.

76H-21"Charles Boatel" with plastic creature 1976

Keywords: Sign, playful.

Location: Falmouth, Massachusetts

The translucent floppy creature was placed on the photo paper when printing this night picture.

76H-30"Net Prophet" fishing boat (view B) 1976

Keywords: Sign, playful.

Location: Woods Hole, Massachusetts.

This is one of my most popular images. I have several negatives taken from slightly different angles. I am told that the boat is no longer there.

77K-03"Herbie...A precious boy" 1977

Keywords: Gravestone, phrase.

Location: Cahoon Hollow, Massachusetts.

Cahoon Hollow is a small town on the ocean side of the arm of Cape Cod.

77M-34Tulip tree leaves & raindrops, 160 Gray St. 1977

Keywords: Plant, leaves.

Location: Amherst, Massachusettes.

This is another popular image and a first place winner in a nature photo contest sponsored by the Robert Floyd Gallery in Southampton.

77N-08Grayboy on patio - 160 Gray St. 1977

Keywords: Animal, cat.

Location: Amherst, Massachusettes.

Grayboy, a cat, had some dog-like behaviors. He belonged to a neighbor across the street, but would regularly sashay over when I sat on our front porch, jump up on my lap, and enjoy (he and me) a good purr and pet.

77P-24Trees in winter mist behind 155 Gray St. 1977

Keywords: Climate, winter.

Location: Amherst, Massachusettes.

The backyard of my neighbors where Grayboy (77N-8) lived. The hemlocks at the bottom are now about 35 feet high.

78A-03Mint plants and wire fence, 160 Gray St. 1978

Keywords: Climate, winter.

Location: Amherst, Massachusettes.

This fence separated our backyard from the Regional High School. Later it was replaced with chain-link; then with solid wood.

78B-02Barn boards; hook and eye 1978

Keywords: Building, detail.

Location: Hadley, Massachusetts.

On the Jekanowski Farm on Roosevelt Road where our kids picked cucumbers and tobacco.

78D-14Tent Caterpillar in nest 1978

Keywords: Animal, caterpillar.

Location: Amherst, Massachusettes.

At Amethyst Brook Conservation Area. I have often snapped insect-infested plants and bug-eaten leaves. This is a good one, I think.

78D-17Toad in Fern Garden - 160 Gray St. 1978

Keywords: Animal, toad.

Location: Amherst, Massachusettes.

This toad lived near the mouth of a drain pipe for several years.

78E-18Wet stones with surf 1978

Keywords: Beach, stones.

Location: Falmouth, Massachusetts.

Stones and shells on the beach sometimes make pleasant images.

78G-06Moth on screen with holes 1978

Keywords: Animal, moth.

Location: Falmouth, Massachusetts.

The small rented cabin belonged to a Zoology Department colleague, Carl Swanson. He called this cabin, "The Cell." It was financed by his royalties on a textbook called "The Cell."

78G-25"BABY" 1978

Keywords: Gravestone, phrase.

Location: Falmouth, Massachusetts.

I think the flowers are chicory, a nice blue color.

78H-20Cedar against Lumbert stone 1978

Keywords: Gravestone, feature.

Location: Falmouth, Massachusetts.

Trees and gravestones sometimes have a long life together and gradually shift positions.

78H-30"World's Greatest Dad" 1978

Keywords: Gravestone, phrase.

Location: Mashpee, Massachusetts.

Touching mementos at an Indian graveyard when a stone is too expensive.

78H-37"Remember" and "Thankful Jones" 1978

Keywords: Gravestone, names.

Location: Marston Mills, Massachusetts.

Old New England names are mostly out of fashion; they would likely think that some of our modern names are odd.

78I-01ASarah Jenkins - "So be it" 1978

Keywords: Gravestone, phrase.

Location: Sandwich, Massachusetts.

Old New England gravestones sometimes have a short verse, but this one was even shorter.

78I-18A"Freddie - Our Angel Boy" 1978

Keywords: Gravestone, phrase.

Location: Sandwich, Massachusetts.

Not far from the Sandwich Glass Museum.

78I-29A "O! Death" with sad figure 1978

Keywords: Gravestone, phrase.

Location: Chilmark, Massachusetts.

Chilmark is on Martha's Vineyard. See also 78I-31A.

78I-31A"Reliance ... A Hopeful Child" 1978

Keywords: Gravestone, name.

Location: Chilmark, Massachusetts.

Unfortunately Hope died at age 12. See nearby stone in image 78I-29A.

79D-19Five Taylors in a row 1979

Keywords: Gravestone, feature.

Location: Montague, Massachusetts.

For interesting images of graveyards, it is hard to beat this one near Montague center.

79E-07With pine limbs bending down 1979

Keywords: View, cemetery.

Location: Montague, Massachusetts.

This shot seems to be the best of a half dozen similar images.

79E-24Thomas L. Butte/rfield 1979

Keywords: Gravestone, name.

Location: Sunderland, Massachusetts.

A surprising number of old New England gravestones have text that is weirdly split between lines. There are other examples in this collection.

79E-26"Tryphosa Gunn, a lovely child..." 1979

Keywords: Gravestone, name.

Location: Sunderland, Massachusetts.

Gunn is a common name (but not Tryphosa) in Sunderland and Montague. I recently (2006) tried to find this stone for old times sake, but couldn't locate it.

80A-33AShed skin of a boa constrictor 1980

Keywords: Animal, snake.

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

For some years I had a pet boa. In my care, she grew from about a half inch in diameter to about four inches in diameter (and six feet long). She was very docile except when she was hungry, so I kept her well fed, mostly with mice.

80B-20Beech Fern at 160 Gray St. 1980

Keywords: Plant, fern.

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

This fern (just a sprig or two) originally came from the side of Mt. Toby. It absolutely loves my back yard where I grow about 20 native fern species.

80F-22Tobacco leaves (Jekanowski farm) 1980

Keywords: Plant, crop.

Location: Hadley, Massachusetts.

As with several other images, this one stemmed from years when our kids picked cucumbers and tobacco. Although tobacco is still profitably grown in the Pioneer Valley (for cigar wrappers, I am told), cucumbers are grown less since a farmers' cooperative (previously Oxford Pickle) closed its processing plant in South Deerfield.

80I-13Tobacco barn end on, Jekanowski farm 1980

Keywords: Building, farm.

Location: Hadley, Massachusetts.

This symmetry is striking in this very popular image.

80I-23Harvesting tobacco 1980

Keywords: Plant, crop.

Location: Hadley, Massachusetts.

My teenage son, Steven, at the Jekanowski Farm on Roosevelt Road. After a single axe cut, the stalks are spiked and hung upside down in barns for drying. This tobacco is used for cigars, I think.

80I-29Chopping tobacco with UMass beyond 1980

Keywords: View, farm.

Location: Hadley, Massachusetts.

The hard-working tobacco chopper is our son, Steven.

81A-18Grass weeds against clapboards 1981

Keywords: Plant, grass.

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

The building was the offices of the USDA on Triangle Street. The building is now doctors' offices. A similar composition is 09C-27

81F-10Stones under large maple tree 1981

Keywords: View, cemetary.

Location: Hadley, Massachusetts.

Cemetery Road in Hadley is one of our favorite views in the valley. Acres and acres of flat, fertile land west of the cemetery with the Berkshire foothills to the west and the Holyoke Range to the south gives us a thrill every time we go to Northampton. Some of the parcels are in danger of being developed and the Kestrel Trust is in the forefront of preservation efforts.

81F-27"Brand S" lumber, and mirrored image 1981

Keywords: Sign, playful.

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

I think the workers who labeled this lumber inadvertently reversed the stencil - or maybe not. I have a large collection of whimsical signs. My policy is to avoid signs that are deliberately cute; this one is border-line.

81F-29Crabgrass in asphalt crack 1981

Keywords: Plant, weed.

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

In the parking lot behind the stores on Triangle Street. Crabgrass is very hardy.

81F-35Fine Arts Center, bike and reflecting pool 1981

Keywords: Building, UMass.

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

Some of my photography friends also have a picture like this. As some viewers know, the reflecting pool is gone. Too bad.

81G-03Unused Library with weeds 1981

Keywords: Building, UMass

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

When the library bricks from high up were chipping off and threatening pedestrians below, the University put a fence around the base, but neglected to cut the weeds inside the fence for a long time. The day after I took this picture while wandering around, the weeds were cut. Your guess as to why is as good as mine.

81G-04"University Gallery" 1981

Keywords: Sign, door.

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

Nice shadows; they have changed since the Fine Arts Center foyer has been built.

81G-07Fine Arts Center, reader on steps 1981

Keywords: Pattern, steps.

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

The reader consented to having his pleasant day interrupted. I don't know who he was.

81G-15Skid marks on high school lot 1981

Keywords: Pattern, skids.

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

I used a ladder to get a better view of high school students "art" work.

81G-25"Samuel Phillips Porter" axed 1981

Keywords: Gravestone, story.

Location: Hadley, Massachusetts.

Why would the family put this sentiment on a gravestone? This stone is no longer there. Where is it?

81G-29Three young Montague children 1981

Keywords: Gravestone, name.

Location: Hadley, Massachusetts.

The Montague graveyard has a lot of photogenic images. (See also 79D-19 and 79E-07.)

81G-31"Daniel Marsh" 1981

Keywords: Gravestone, name.

Location: Hadley, Massachusetts.

Apparently hand-carved on a tight budget. When photographing gravestones I often use a door mirror mounted on a tripod so I can glance sunlight off the stone to better read the inscription. Note that the stone in the background has a dark side toward the viewer; the Marsh stone would too except for the mirror off the picture to the right.

81G-32Sarah Hopkins Williams 1981

Keywords: Gravestone, name.

Location: Hadley, Massachusetts.

The previous and the next negative are also in this collection. A good photo day.

81G-33Chester Williams 1981

Keywords: Gravestone, name.

Location: Hadley, Massachusetts.

An upstanding citizen.

81H-02Girl in UMass chain link maze 1981

Keywords: Pattern, fence.

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

The maze no longer exists. It was fun but fell into disrepair. Its place has been taken by the astronomical Stonehenge-like array.

81H-09Amherst dog pound (since moved) 1981

Keywords: Building, run-down.

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

There was a dog there (just one), but it did not want its picture taken.

81I-12Gas pumps boarded up [now dental office] 1981

Keywords: Building, run-down.

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

Since the 1960's, an auto mechanic garage on this spot, and then just a gas station both folded. Funny, its location on Triangle Street with its traffic seems ideal. It is now a dental office. (Some viewers will know that there was plenty of opposition to the building of Triangle Street in the early 1800's, and at night protestors would dig up what was put down during the day.)

81I-16"Emily Dickinson, Called Back" 1981

Keywords: Gravestone, name.

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

I have seen several versions of this difficult-to-take picture. (Check it out.) Mine is pretty good.

81K-09Library with student and swans 1981

Keywords: Building, UMass

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

How's this for a post card?

81K-17Fine Arts Center, strollers and dog 1981

Keywords: Building, UMass

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

It's too bad that the dog doesn't look very dog-like.

81L-30Five school buses in a row - Junior High 1981

Keywords: Vehicle, buses.

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

Buses line up at the (now) Amherst Middle School. When I look at this picture I always ask myself why it is "buses" rather than "busses."

82A-12Post Office and Tax Collector 1982

Keywords: Building, official.

Location: New Salem, Massachusetts.

This building is no longer there. The picture was taken a not long before sunset.

82A-19"Mary Ann" with fence and shadow 1982

Keywords: Gravestone, name.

Location: New Salem, Massachusetts.

Near the Post Office (82A-12) even closer to sunset. At last check, Mary Ann's stone is still there.

82B-04Road to Greenwood Music Camp 1982

Keywords: View, woods.

Location: Cummington, Massachusetts.

This shot was used for the advertising poster for my first photo show, "Across the Valley; from Cummington to New Salem," at the Burnett Gallery in 1983. The Burnett Gallery was relocated (to its current quarters) when the Jones Library addition was built in the early 1990's.

82B-08Small stone embraced by tree trunk 1982

Keywords: Gravestone, feature.

Location: Cummington, Massachusetts.

It's clear that both the stone and the tree have a long history in this spot.

82B-30Clapboards and window 1982

Keywords: Buildingm run-down.

Location: Cummington, Massachusetts.

I think the structure seen in the window is a bed. Note that you can see through the small house.

82C-05Large cut leaf beech, Main and Triangle 1982

Keywords: Plant, tree.

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

The tree is still there and healthy (but needs trimming) just south of the Woman's Club building.

82D-01"Tillson Farm Boiler Plant" - sort of 1982

Keywords: Sign, playful.

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

I think this is a true whimsical sign in that it occurred without plan - the letters just fell off. Some viewers will know that the multi-million-dollar power plant never operated because it was incorrectly designed and/or constructed. It is still there (with its tall stack, 82D-14), although the oil tank (82D-11) for fuel storage has been dismantled.

82D-11Steps wrapped around oil tank, UMass 1982

Keywords: Pattern, steps.

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

This tank was built for fuel for the faulty power plant (82D-01). I love the subtle shifting patterns of the steps and their shadows.

82D-14Smokestack on inoperable power plant 1982

Keywords: Building, UMass.

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

An impressive symbol of things gone awry.

82F-09Marijuana in flagstone crack, UMass 1982

Keywords: Plants, weeds.

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

While wandering around campus I snapped this small marijuana plant in a flagstone crack at the campus center, most likely from a discarded butt. I spent a lot of time with composition. As with the weeds around the library (81G-03), the next day the plant was not there. I think a university employee saw me and thought I was about to write a newspaper expose of campus life.

82F-13Parking garage and smoke stacks 1982

Keywords: Buildings, UMass.

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

A big still life.

82G-05Goatsbeard under Elder Lumber 1982

Keywords: Plant, flower.

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

A lovely flower in an inauspicious spot. All it takes sometimes is one flower to grace a scene.

82G-09Three Raggedy Anns in wagon 1982

Keywords: Arts, fair.

Location: Deerfield, Massachusetts.

For what it's worth, my mother (then age 81) really liked this picture. Since viewers filter images through their own unique experiences of a lifetime, it is often unpredictable what will appeal to different people.

82G-14Family of grotesques stuffed in silk 1982

Keywords: Arts, fair.

Location: Deerfield, Massachusetts.

My friend, Alex Page (English Department), was taken with this and similar images of grotesques at the Old Deerfield Crafts Fair. He is a skilled humorist and I appreciate his support.

82H-08Windsor Dam 1982

Keywords: Climate, fog.

Location: Quabbin, Massachusetts.

This image is one of my personal favorites and has long hung on my own wall. I have always printed it small - 5x7" -- although it is a very large object -- a viewer takes it in all at once. And it reminds me of the personal sacrifices of many regular folk who were called on to relieve the thirst of faraway but powerful people.

82I-10Lion in window of Quincy Market store 1982

Keywords: Arts, store.

Location: Boston, Massachusetts.

See my wife, Elaine, in the window?

82I-19Quincy Market band and strollers 1982

Keywords: People, street.

Location: Boston, Massachusetts.

Taken from a Faneuil Hall window.

82J-16Two Mary Persons stones 1982

Keywords: Gravestones, names.

Location: Northampton, Massachusetts.

Gravestones reveal that old New England families sometimes reused the name of a dead child.

82K-05APrize apples at Cummington Fair 1982

Keywords: Plant, fruit.

Location: Cummington, Massachusetts.

We go to the Cummington Fair almost every year. It's down-to-earth New England at its best.

82L-08Elijah Bordwell - thrown from horse 1982

Keywords: Gravestone, story.

Location: Montague, Massachusetts.

Gravestones sometimes tell a story - not always a short story.

82L-10"Our birth is nothing" 1982

Keywords: Gravestone, phrase.

Location: Montague, Massachusetts.

I get a tear every time.

82L-21"ALMYS" 1982

Keywords: Sign, run-down.

Location: Hadley, Massachusetts.

The malls in Hadley passed through some tough times, and Almys didn't last too long. Here it is defunct.

82M-25Pickle vat "379" 1982

Keywords: Sign, number

Location: South Deerfield, Massachusetts.

This is one of hundreds (you see) of vats at the Oxford Pickle processing plant. Elaine and I wandered in, and, although we wondered whether we should be there, nobody stopped us. We climbed a ladder to view the cucumber contents and (we say) could have spat in the vat. After perhaps 15 minutes, someone politely suggested that we leave.

83B-18"MSC" banister ironwork, UMass 1983

Keywords: Sign, run-down.

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

That is, Massachusetts State College (one stage in University evolution) on the President's hill path.

83B-31Carved "Lisa+Steve" Durfee beech tree 1983

Keywords: Sign, graffiti.

This is one of many Girl + Boy signs in my collection.

83C-32Me taking a picture of a hornet's nest 1983

Keywords: Arthur, age 52.

Location: Leverett, Massachusetts.

This picture was taken by my wife, Elaine, at Moore's Corner. I think the building is the Leverett Historical Society.

83D-32Marble bank facade within museum 1983

Keywords: Building, museum.

Location: New York, New York.

This bank, Branch of the United States Bank, stood on Wall Street, 1822-1824. The facade was preserved and reconstructed inside the museum in 1924. The roof latticework is seen from the outside in picture 83E-04.

83D-36Cleopatra and viewer - Metropolitan 1983

Keywords: Arts, museum.

Location: New York, New York.

I have to go look at this statue every time we visit the MET, to see is anyone else is staring at Cleopatra's breast.

83E-04Couple outside Metropolitan glass facade 1983

Keywords: Arts, museum.

Location: New York, New York.

My hip young friends tell me that the Led Zeppellins are still in business.

83E-30Looking out my Aunt Nata's window. 1983

Keywords: View, city.

Location: New York, New York.

My aunt lived in an apartment at 72nd Street and 3rd Avenue. The view is northwest toward Central Park (unseen). The picture shows where people live, but no people are seen. The viewer can find four wooden water tanks, which are all over New York, even on top of the fanciest places.

83E-34Strollers and manikins, 3rd Avenue 1983

Keywords: People, street.

Location: New York, New York.

We used to visit my Aunt Nata on the upper East Side once in a while. She had the world's most uncomfortable pull-out sofa, probably to discourage visitors.

83F-11Gear & Flask, Museum of Modern Art 1983

Keywords: Arts, museum.

Location: New York, New York.

I'd like to say this was a carefully arranged image, but, in fact, it just happened.

83F-15East 53rd with Citibank Building 1983

Keywords: View, city.

Location: New York, New York.

I am reminded that my favorite painter, Edward Hopper, lived almost all his entire life in New York City and never painted a skyscraper (except maybe for the bottoms). He was into things horizontal.

83F-22"How do I love thee..." 1983

Keywords: Sign, playful.

Location: New York, New York.

A vase in the window of the Steuben Glass store. It struck my funny bone that love was worth exactly $250.

83F-25Steuben kingfisher - 5th Avenue store 1983

Keywords: Arts, store.

Location: New York, New York.

There is no more lighting here than the store arranged. They did a superb job.

83H-08Merry-go-round horses [circular] 1983

Keywords: Arts, fair.

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

I have many times tried to get good images of carousel horses (which are often artful). This is the best I can do.

83H-25"Reserved for Masse's Fish" 1983

Keywords: Sign, playful.

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

This sign really struck my funny bone. The store is no longer there - it is now Bruegger's Bagels. But Masse's still has a store in Chicopee, and I occasionally see their truck in Amherst.

83K-06Ted Sargent's dobros 1983

Lots of cute puns here; choose your favorite.

83Q-09Emily Dickinson's steps, Main St. 1983

83S-17Two Holsteins, Roaring Brook Rd. 1983

Keywords: Animal, cows.

Location: Conway, Massachusetts.

83T-24"Trespassing Forbidden" at State School 1983

Keywords: Sign, command.

The Belchertown State School had been closed for several years, its citizens dispersed, and its buildings quick to disintegrate.

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

Keywords: Sign, playful.

Location: Amherst, Massachusetts.

Another historical photo.

84I-13Abandoned mall parking lot 1984

Keywords: Building, run-down.

Location: Hadley, Massachusetts.

I have several views of abandoned malls from Georgia to Massachusetts. This mall, "Mountain Farms," (or just "the old mall") has been reincarnated (including Whole Foods), but who knows what the next evolutionary phase will be.

84I-20"No bombs, I love earth" Ferraro rally 1984

85E-18With Travelers Insurance Building 1985

Keywords: Gravestone, feature.

Location: Hartford, Connecticut.

85G-20"Frances Howland, Well Done" 1985

Keywords: Gravestone, phrase.

Location: Leverett, Massachusetts.

Picture taken in 1985. The stone was not present in 2010.

85G-32Joyce in glacial pothole 1985

Keywords: Family, mine.

Location: Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts.

Joyce is my niece - a schoolteacher in the Washington, D.C. area. The glacial potholes are now fenced off, I suppose for liability reasons, but it was really fun to once crawl over the area unhindered by thoughts of safety.

85H-12"Pratt Memorial Library" 1985

Keywords: Building, library.

Location: Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts.

I was interested in the fact that the Public Library in Baltimore (where our daughter works) is the Enoch Pratt Library. I think the two Pratts are not closely related.

More stories of death.

85K-27Discarded Mahar seats behind power 1985

Keywords: Junk, seats.

Talking about putting your foot in your mouth: One day, when this garden was new, I meandered around. A man was raking smooth the gravel paths. I asked him the name of the flowers that graced a fence, and he told me (a Clematis species). Then I said that I loved the layout (and whimsical stone decorations), but was put off by the pink plastic-covered poles. He said, "That's funny; I designed this garden." So said Dean Cardasis of the Landscape Architecture Department (filling in for the maintenance person, who had broken his shoulder).

This is a good place to say to my friends who inquire about why I don't do color? The answer is that I find enough to do in black and white, and sometimes color is a distraction. Occasionally, I say to myself, wouldn't this be a nice image in color, and I either take it anyway, or I don't take it at all. I can say this would be a nice color picture. So be it.
