Historical Note

The Next Step was founded by Sara Jonsberg in 1989 through the combined effort of the Care Center of Holyoke and Mount Holyoke College. This program was designed to give teen mothers the opportunity to attend college. The program originated as a summer program, but then also included January Term. Primary goals were to teach writing and self-expression, and to encourage young mothers to consider attending college.
