Return to the Table of Contents Historical NoteA Dean of Freshmen was first appointed in 1973 to deal with the affairs of first year students, and remained within the Office of the Dean of the Faculty until 1990. In that year the Office of the Dean of Studies was separated from the Office of the Dean of the Faculty to function independently. Concurrently, the Dean of Freshmen was re-titled Dean of First Year Studies - in 1991 the name was changed to Dean of First Year Students - and began to function within the Office of the Dean of Studies. The materials detail academic and nonacademic problems and concerns of the first year class and include information about first year tutorials and faculty advising for the students.
