Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Deborah Simpson Hutchings Papers, 1974-1978, are comprised ofcorrespondence, biographical materials, and photographs. The correspondence consists of letters and postcards that she wrote to her parents, younger sisters, and grandfather while she was a student at Mount Holyoke College from 1974-1978. In the letters she discusses the process of adjusting to college, course registration, preparing for exams, housing arrangements, the cost of books, employment, and the Student Government Association. Two SGA topics of note are students serving on the Board of Trustees and the grading system at Mount Holyoke. She also discusses friendships, shopping in Amherst, MA and Northampton, MA, concerts, movies, plays, church, playing sports, patchwork, being a member of Campus Gold Girl Scouts, and traveling. The biographical materials (1974-1978) consist of a press release that concerns her enrollment at Mount Holyoke in 1974 and a graduation announcement. There are 14 three by five inch color snapshots that feature Ms. Hutchings as an undergraduate student and campus landmarks, including Lower Lake and the 1837 and North Mandelle dormitories.
