Biographical Note

Miriam Camp Camps, a Foreign Affairs Officer, editor, and author was born in 1916 in Lynn, Massachusetts and graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1937. After receiving her master's degree from Bryn Mawr College in 1938, she was a foreign affairs officer in the U.S. Department of State from 1939-1954. During that time she worked in several foreign affairs departments. Among them were the Board of Economic Warfare at the U.S. Embassy in London, the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Economic and Social Affairs, the Policy Planning Staff and the Bureau of European Affairs. She specialized in problems relating to European economic cooperation and integration and was involved in the development and implementation of the Marshall Plan, the Organization for European Economic Cooperation (which became the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development), the European Coal and Steel Community and other forerunners of the European Community. In 1953 she was acting head of the US Delegation to the annual meeting in Geneva of the UN Economic Commission for Europe. In 1954, she resigned to marry Professor William A. Camps, Master of Pembroke College, Cambridge University and was an editor at the Economist from 1954-1956. Camps returned to the Department of State in 1961 as a consultant to the under secretary for economic affairs, and in 1967 she became an international economist in the Office of the Secretary. She was appointed vice chairwoman of the Policy Planning Staff from 1968-1970. She was associated with the organization known as Political and Economic Planning (London), the Royal Institute of Foreign Affairs (London), and the Council on Foreign Relations (New York). Her association with the Council on Foreign Relations began in 1963, and led to the publication of several studies, among them "First World Relationships: the Role of the OECD"; the "1980s Project," and "The New Multilateralism: Can the International Trading System Be Saved?" (in collaboration with William Diebold). Camps was the author of eight books, including "Britain and the European Community, 1955-63"; "What Kind of Europe?"; and "European Unification in the Sixties". She also wrote numerous articles for professional journals. She received an honorary LL.D. degree from Mount Holyoke College (1959); was a Fellow of Wolfson College, Cambridge University; and was a member of the Executive Committee and Council of the International Institute of Strategic Studies in London. Camps died in 1995.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The papers of Miriam Camp Camps consist of both personal and professional information. They include correspondence with, among others, her sister Margaret Schwartz, Bill Diebold, Linc Gordon, John and Margaret Leddy, Carl D. Corse, Jacques Reinstein, Francois Duchene, Henry Owens, Prudence Steiner and Julie Katzman, (1959-1993); writings and reference notes (1950-1985); notebooks (1954-1975); approximately 158 books; memos; papers, articles and pamphlets (both by Camps and by others); 17 Subject Files on topics such as Europe, Trade, UNCTAD, etc.; biographical material consisting of a "Chronology" of her life, resumes, interviews, articles, a book of friends' recollections, a video cassette, newspaper clippings and obituaries and tributes (1937-1995); "daily diaries" (appointment books), dated from 1954-1993; passports (1954-1988); and photographs. The materials document her long career in international economics and politics. They provide detailed information about her published and unpublished work in the field of international relations; the conferences she attended and talks she gave; and her interest in a variety of economic and political institutions and policies.

Primarily consists of Camp's correspondence with colleagues and friends, including her sister Margaret Schwartz, Bill Diebold, Francois Duchene, Jacques Reinstein, Linc Gordon, John and Margaret Leddy, Carl D. Corse, Henry Owens, Prudence Steiner and Julie Katzman. The correspondence documents both her personal and professional life.

Writings and Book Notes, 1950-1985 2 boxes, 2.5 linear ft

Writings and book notes consists of copies of some of Camp's published work, such as articles and papers. Also included are book reviews; letters related to her books and articles; article and book notes; and reference material in connection with her books Britain and the EC 1955-1963, What Kind of Europe?, European Unification in the Sixties, Management of Interdependence, and New Multilateralism (a book whe wrote with Bill Diebold).

Contains 18 of Camp's notebooks, dated from 1954 to 1975. The note book consist of notes from various meetings, discussion groups, etc.

Consists of notes, proceedings and papers read at conferences, meetings, seminars and discussion groups which Miriam Camp attended. These conferences were on matters related to European and American international economic and political affairs, such as the Tuxedo Park Conferences, Ditchley Conferences and Chatham House European Groups.

Talks consists of written versions of talks given by Camp, lecture notes and related correspondence. The subject matter of her talks includes European economic and political affairs, US-Western European relations and international trade.

This series contains notes Camp made during her trips abroad, mainly to Brussels and Paris. They provide information on her discussions and meetings with various people involved in international economic and political affairs.

Consists of Camp's notes from her interviews of various people, including British Prime Minister Edward Heath.

Contians material related to the major organizations and institutions with which Camp was associated, through her writings or conferences, such as GATT, NATO, OEEC, OECD, UK Six, UN, UNCTAD, the Marshall Plan and the 1980s Project. This series also contains information related to Camp's interest in international trade, European economic and political affairs (including the European Monetary Union), and US-Western European relations (including US foreign policy). Also included are records of her work as a thesis advisor and examiner at Cambridge University for MPhil and PhD candidates. Camp's correspondence with, and writings by, Bill Diebold is also documented.

Consists of 40 "daily diaries" (appointment books) which contain sketchy information on Camp's daily activities.

Contains Camp's passports which she used over the course of her career. Several of of them are diplomatic, reflecting the many official journeys she undertook to conferences on behalf of the United States Government. Also included is a copy of the 1945 memorial service held in London for President Franklin Roosevelt.
