Biographical Note

Mark Antony Lower was born in Heathfield, England in July 1813, the son of Richard Lower. He was a school master from the 1830's through the 1860's, including 32 years at Lewes. He was a founding member of the Sussex Archaeological Society and the author of "Patronymica Britannica" and of several scholarly books on the history of Sussex. He died in London in 1876.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

Two lectures read at the Mechanics Institute in Lewes, Sussex, England on the famous Bayeux tapestry, which depicts the conquest of England by William the Conquerer. With this is included a "Specimen of the Bayeux Tapestry from Dr. Bruce's work", i.e., John Collingwood Bruce's book "The Bayeux Tapestry Elucitated] and a transcript of the lectures made by David Hill.
