Biographical NoteJean Allyn Garis was born on April 2, 1914 in Summit, New Jersey to Norman S. Garis, a printer, and Jesse Allyn Wells Garis. After graduating from Summit High School in 1931 she entered Mount Holyoke College and graduated in 1935 with honors in English. In 1935-1936 she completed graduate studies in Religious and Social Education at Pendle Hill school in Wallingford, Pennsylvania. She worked on a book about religion by Mount Holyoke professor Mary Hussey and served as Director of a Young Women's Christian Association Stay at Home camp before marrying Harold Dinsmore Flood, a Methodist Episcopal minister on October 20, 1936. They had three children. After her marriage she engaged in various volunteer projects including assuming the presidency of both Church Women United in Reading, Pennsylvania and The Philadelphia Minister's Wife Association. She also wrote stories and poems that were published in several periodicals. She died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 25, 2001 at the age of eighty-seven. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Contents of the CollectionThe Jean Garis Flood Papers consist of correspondence, course records, writings, newspaper clippings, an obituary and memorial service program, and photographs. The papers pertain primarily to her years as a student at Mount Holyoke College, 1931-1935. Correspondence includes two letters by her written in 1932, the first of which discusses a lecture given by Arthur Baker Lewis, 1932 Socialist candidate for Massachusetts Governor; political propaganda on the Mount Holyoke campus; exercises in which students simulate stock and bond investment in order to determine an appropriate response to the Depression as part of an Economics class; entertaining male visitors; and a dinner "bat" (party). The second 1932 letter describes Bell Telephone Laboratories' demonstration of television on the campus. There is also a 1958 letter by one of her former teachers, Leonora Branch, which contains impressions of the new president, Richard Glenn Gettell. Course records are for religion classes with David Ernest Adams, a sociology class, and several English classes including one with Jeannette Marks. The records consist of papers by Flood that include occasional comments by professors and a copy of her honors examination. Writings consist of examples of her original poetry and new words to a Mount Holyoke song. Included in biographical information are newspaper clippings, an obituary and a program for her memorial service. Photographs include formal portraits and snapshots of Flood, a photograph of her undergraduate residence hall room in Wilder, a photograph of her participating in a graduate study on venous pressure in women in about 1934, a photograph from her class reunion in 1985, and family photographs.
