Biographical NoteFelicien Rops was born in Belgium, but spent his professional life moving between Belgium and France. A painter, engraver and lithographer, Rops is known particularly for depicting women in sexually provocative poses. He was a member of the avant-garde in Belgium,a founding member of the Societe Libre des Beaux-Arts, and he joined Les XX in Brussels in 1886. He was technically innovative and his prints have always been highly regarded by collectors. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Contents of the CollectionLetters, chiefly undated, primarily to Francois Nys, a printer in Paris with whom Rops worked (some dated: 1886, 1891-1892), Henri Liesse, and others. The letters are both personal, arranging for visits and asking for money, and professional, talking of designs on which he was working at the time. The longest letter, which lacks a salutation, describes an amorous escapade and a design for La Vie Parisienne by Robida. Includes seven proof etchings to works published in 1864 and 1866.
