Biographical NoteRuth Estelle Mills was born on December 5, 1915 in Mount Vernon, New York, to Earl Harrison and Violet Louise Morrison. She had one brother, Earl Harrison Mills, Jr. She graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1932, and from Mount Holyoke College in 1936. In 1937 she began working as a secretary in New York City. She married Frank Shaw, Jr., and had a son, Frank, in 1944. In 1962 she began working for DuPont as a stenographer. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Contents of the CollectionThe Ruth Estelle Mills Zencey Papers contain correspondence, 1941-1951; memorabilia; and photographs. The correspondence consists of letters written to and from Earl Mills, Ruth's younger brother. He was in the army and stationed in a variety of locations throughout World War II. The letters describe the war overseas, and also life on the homefront. The memorabilia includes a World War II ration book, a post card, a drawing, a few programs from concerts, an Air Raid Warning Poster and a few newspaper clippings. The photographs are of Earl Mills.
