Biographical Note

There is little biographical information available for Lydia Bell De Lany Moscrip (dates unknown). Her last name was spelled variously as Moscrip, Moscript, and Moscritz, She is addressed in some correspondence as "Bell." According to U.S. census records, Lydia Bell De Lany was married to Charles H. Moscrip in Keokuk, Lee Co., Iowa. In 1900 they were residing in Rochester, New York, and they lived in Galen, New York, circa 1920. They had a son, Amos D., and a daughter, Virginia (Jennie).

Lydia Moscrip was one of the original members of the Suffrage Club founded in Clyde, New York in 1914, serving as vice president. She was also a member of the Women's Liberty Loan Committee in 1917 and the American Red Cross from 1918 to 1920.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The papers consist primarily of printed ephemera and memorabilia relating to Lydia Moscrip's New York suffrage activities, circa 1914-1917, and her World War I activities. There is also a small amount of incoming personal correspondence.

Suffrage items consist of flyers and pamphlets of the New York State Suffrage Party; two undated clippings, including an editorial by Anna Howard Shaw; and a commemorative booklet celebrating Susan B. Anthony's eightieth birthday. World War I material consists of Liberty Loan flyers and advertisements, Red Cross membership cards and service flag, food rationing campaign items and recipes, knitting patters, and miscellaneous items. The correspondence includes descriptions of the 1918 influenza epidemic and its effect on the Moscrip family life.
