Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Minorities Collection consists primarily of published material relating to the status of women of color and white ethnic women in the United States. The collection dates from 1915 to 1983, with the bulk of the material ranging from 1935 to 1976. Types of materials include articles, pamphlets, newsletters, bibliographies, position papers, and clippings. Items of particular interest include The Indian School Journal (Chilocco, OK, 1926); and unpublished position papers from the Wesleyan College Center for Research on Women. Books include The White Brute, by Mary White Ovington (1915), A Resource Guide of American Indian-Alaskan Native Women (U.S. Department of Education, 1980), and four reports from Conference on the Educational and Occupational Needs of Black, Hispanic, Asian-Pacific American, American Indian, and White Ethnic Women (U.S. Department of Education, 1976-78). There is also a list of photographs of "distinguished Blacks, abolitionists, and civil rights workers" that can be found in other locations within the Sophia Smith Collection.
