The College Archives is home to over six hundred artifacts which supplement the documentary and photographic history of Smith College. They range in date from 1879 to the present; some cannot be precisely dated. The Artifacts Collection includes Smith College, class, and club pins and jewelry, Reunion paraphernalia, house banners and t-shirts, samples of the Smith Wedgwood china, Smith College Relief Unit mementos, souvenirs from special events, and countless other objects-many of which resist easy categorization.

Every artifact has been assigned a Registration Number. It is used to catalogue and assign a location to the artifact, and bears no relation to the type of artifact, its date, or the date of its acquisition. The register is arranged numerically by registration number. Because of this, the paper copy of the register is useful largely for casual browsing, and the keyword-searchable computer file should be used for directed searches.
The following abbreviations are used in the register:
Bx = Artifacts BoxPn = Pin/Jewelry BoxFt = Flat BoxLDC = Lounge Display CaseLSC = Lounge Spoon CaseSm = Small BoxA91 or A91a = Archivists' OfficesJnx = Joannex (for objects too large to be boxed)
