Biographical Note

Selby Sheridan Eddy was born in Boston, Mass. on June 8, 1969, the son of Helen Eddy Estes and John Estes. His parents separated soon after his birth, and Selby was raised by his mother and her family. When Selby was in elementary school, both he and his mother changed their last name back to Eddy.

Selby attended public elementary school in Belmont, Mass. He then enrolled in Principia Upper School in St. Louis, Missouri, where he graduated in 1987.

Selby spent about fifteen summers at Camp Owatonna in Harrison, Maine, first as a camper and later as a counselor. His experiences at Camp Owatonna had a major impact on his life.

Selby's grandfather, Allyn Eddy, became a Christian Scientist when Helen was a young girl, and Christian Science was a major and continuing influence on Selby's life. Both Principia and Camp Owatonna are institutions affiliated with that denomination.

In the fall of 1987 Selby was admitted to Hampshire College in Amherst, Mass. While there, he became interested in video and film making and produced a film, We're Spies, for his Division III (Senior project). The film consists of material gathered from his experiences at Camp Owatonna. Selby graduated from Hampshire in May 1993.

Selby Eddy was killed in a construction accident at Camp Owatonna on June 5, 1993.

Organization of the Collection

This collection is organized into five series:

Return to the Table of Contents

Series 1: Video and Audio Tapes and Films

This series contains raw video and audiotape footage used by Selby to create the three films present in the collection. The 16 mm print of We're Spies was submitted as Selby's Division III exam at Hampshire College. Hampshire College also has a videotape copy (Video 566) of the film in its circulating collection.

It is arranged by type of material, and by date (if present).

Series 2: Photographs, Slides and Artwork

The photographs in this series span all of Selby's life, from baby and childhood pictures to prints taken and developed by him as part of his study of photography. There are also many slides, some labeled and dated. Finally, there is a collection of artwork, mainly by Selby, but with one folder of childhood artwork addressed to Selby.

The series is arranged by type of material, and roughly in chronological order where that could be determined.

Series 3: Educational Materials

This series contains schoolwork, papers and publications from the institutions attended by Selby.

It is arranged by institution and then by course or subject within that institution.

Series 4: Correspondence

This series contains correspondence between Selby and his friends and relatives. There are four folders of correspondence between Selby and his mother, Helen Eddy. Finally, there are two folders of photocopies of selected correspondence made by Helen Eddy, Selby's mother, after his death to share with friends, as well as a notebook of material from the memorial service.

It is arranged by correspondent, except for folders of single letters grouped by the context in which Selby knew the authors.

Series 5: Journals

This series contains journals and journal writings of various types.

The records in this series are filed in chronological order, first the soft-covered or unbound journals, then the hardbound journals.
