Historical Note

Albert Wells Hubbard (AC 1867), the son of Chauncey P. and Mary (Wells) Hubbard, was born in Cameron, N.Y., October 18, 1841, and was fitted for college in the preparatory department of Alfred University, N.Y. He also attended Alfred in 1863 for his first year in college. He entered Amherst College in September 1864, graduating in 1867.

Hubbard obtained his theological education at Princeton Seminary, graduating in 1870. He was ordained on May 1, 1870 in Dillsburg, Pennsylvania, and was pastor of the Monaghan Presbyterian Church there until 1873.

In the autumn of 1873 he married Emma R. Spencer and entered the service of the American Board of Missions. His first assignment was the station in Sivas, Western Turkey where he and Emma continued their missionary work until his death from pneumonia and pleurisy on April 13, 1899. The Hubbards had eight children, of whom four would graduate from Amherst College: Ray Spencer (b. Dec. 3, 1875, AC 1900), Crescens (b. Sept. 1, 1877, AC 1900), Hugh Wells (b. Mar. 19, 1887, AC 1908), and Theodore Horace (b. July 5, 1892, AC 1914).

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Hubbard Family Papers date from circa 1864 to 1909. The majority of the papers represent personal correspondence among Albert Wells Hubbard, his wife Emma Roxanna Spencer Hubbard and their immediate family. Correspondence with friends and colleagues is also included. The papers chronicle A.W. Hubbard's graduate years at Princeton until several years after his death in 1899. The bulk of the material documents his years as a missionary in Turkey between 1873 and 1899.

Although Albert Wells Hubbard is the central figure in the collection, correspondence of Emma Roxanna Spencer Hubbard is well represented. Emma corresponded regularly with Albert's siblings and parents, and it is through her correspondence that the researcher is introduced to the extended Spencer family; her sisters and parents. Correspondence with their children is located in Series 1 and 2 of the papers.

The Hubbard Papers are a combination of two gifts and consist of letters from Sivas from the Hubbards to their families and children dating from 1864 to 1902. The accession was a gift, received on June 14, 1972, from Hugh Wells Hubbard, Amherst class of 1908, and son of Albert Wells and Emma R. Spencer Hubbard. This accession included letters from A.W. Hubbard and E.R.S. Hubbard, living in Sivas, to their children and relatives, and date from 1873 to 1901. The second accession was a gift of Emma Hubbard Martin, daughter of Hugh Hubbard, on June 22, 1993, and included approximately 100 letters dating from 1864 to 1902.

The two gifts are organized together within each given series. Each letter from the separate acquisitions is in a separate folder and its individual accession number is noted. Thus, provenance of the documents is clear.
