Bailey LeFevre Brown was born in Jamestown, New York in 1903. After attending Jamestown High School, he entered Amherst College with the Class of 1924. He received the M.A. from Princeton University in 1925. In 1926-1927 he was instructor of Mathematics at Bryn Mawr College. In 1927 he joined the faculty at Amherst College in the department of Mathematics, first as an Instructor (1927-1936), then as Assistant Professor (1936-1941), Associate Professor (1941-1947) and Professor (1947-). He was the author of several articles on abstract algebra. Brown died in 1971.
