Biographical Note

Eva Schiffer (1925-2010), born in Austria, was a professor in the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures at the University of Massachusetts Amherst from 1955-1988. In addition to various articles on 20th-century German literature and numerous book reviews, she is the editor of the correspondence between the eminent former Amherst College political scientist Karl Loewenstein and Thomas Mann (1981, 1982). She died in 2010 in Amherst, Mass.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

Mainly correspondence related to the compilation, editing, and permissions to publish the correspondence between Thomas Mann and Karl Lowenstein, published in Blätter der Thomas Mann-Gesellschaft, Nr. 18-19 (1981-82). The collection also includes photocopies and transcriptions of the original Mann-Loewenstein correspondence. The correspondence between the famed German author and later émigré Mann and the legal scholar Loewenstein dates from 1933 (the year Loewenstein emigrated from Germany to join the faculty at Yale University) to Mann's death in 1955. Loewenstein was on the faculty of Amherst College from 1936 to 1961. The collection includes correspondence with various archives, the Thomas Mann Gesellschaft in Zurich, and a variety of Mann scholars and family members, including Golo Mann, the son of Thomas Mann.
