The collection consists chiefly of correspondence, diaries, sermons and commencement orations written by Amherst College alumni from 1821 to 1909, which were removed from numerous Alumni Biographical Files. Documents were presumably selected because of their perceived historical significance. The collection was compiled ca. 1981, but the project was never completed. Most of the items were catalogued on typed card files, but three boxes of documents were either left unprocessed or were added later. Processing of the collection was fully completed in November 2008.
Please use the following format when citing materials from this collection:
[Identification of item], in: Historical Manuscripts Collection [Box #, Folder #], Amherst College Archives and Special Collections, Amherst College Library.
There is no restriction on access to the Historical Manuscripts Collection for research use. Particularly fragile items may be restricted for preservation purposes.
Requests for permission to publish material from Historical Manuscripts Collection should be directed to Archives and Special Collections. It is the responsibility of the researcher to identify and satisfy the holders of all copyrights.
