Abstract: Letters, reports, minutes, speeches, photographs, printed matter and other materials documenting Charles W. Cole's personal life and professional career as President of Amherst College (1946-1960) and as a member of a variety of committees and boards in the private and public sector. The collection also includes correspondence and other personal papers of Cole's first wife, Katharine, but does not include any significant material related to Cole's appointment as Ambassador to Chile or Trustee of Hampshire College.

Biographical Note

1906 Feb 8: Born in Montclair, New Jersey, son of Charles Buckingham and Bertha Woolsey (Dwight) Cole. Attends Montclair High School.
1923 Enrolls at Amherst College, where he is a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity, The Amherst Student, and Phi Beta Kappa.
1926 April-December: serves as Editor-in-Chief of The Amherst Student.
1927 June: Graduates summa cum laude from Amherst College.

1939 Book: Colbert and a Century of French Mercantilism is published
1940-1946 Professor of History, Columbia University
1941-1945 During World War II, Cole spends a year with the Office of Price Administration in Washington and two years in New York City as Regional Price Executive
1942 LHD (hon.), Amherst College
1943 Book: French Mercantilism, 1683-1700 is published.
1946-1960 12th President, Amherst College. Under Cole's administration the "New Curriculum" is introduced, in which each student is required to take a course in science, English, European civilization and a foreign language. Also, the teaching faculty is strengthened, the student body grows in size from 1,000 to 1,200 and its endowment grows from $16 million to $42 million. Upon his retirement he is elected President Emeritus by the Board of Trustees.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

Letters, reports, minutes, speeches, photographs, printed matter and other materials documenting Charles W. Cole's personal life and professional career as President of Amherst College (1946-1960) and as a member of a variety of committees and boards in the private and public sector. The collection also includes correspondence and other personal papers of Cole's first wife, Katharine. Charles Cole's personal papers include a large volume of correspondence with his parents and with Charles H. Morgan; also undergraduate material, family photographs and awards. Amherst College material is limited to speeches made as President and materials documenting his visit to Doshisha University, Japan, in 1953, including a photograph album. Cole's writings include mainly manuscripts for his 1935 book Colbert and a Century of French Mercantilism. The rest of the collection consists of files relating to Cole's service on a variety of boards and committees, including the Fund for the Republic, Committee on the National Security Organization, American Cancer Society, U.S. Air Force, Merrill Foundation for the Advancement of Financial Knowledge, Educational Testing Service, and Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association.

Series 5, PERSONAL AFFAIRS, 1906-1953 (bulk 1920-1953), includes mostly school papers and photographs. It is organized into the following sub-series: A. Undergraduate Years, 1923-1927, includes Amherst College notes, papers, assignments and examinations; material on his membership in Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and editorship of The Amherst Student; and other materials documenting Cole's undergraduate life. Series 7: FUND FOR THE REPUBLIC, INC., 1952-1960

Series 7, FUND FOR THE REPUBLIC, INC., 1952-1960, includes correspondence, press releases, minutes, clippings, Fund reports and other printed matter relating to the activities of the Fund for the Republic, Inc., an independent, non-profit corporation established in New York City in December 1952 with a grant from the Ford Foundation. Charles Cole joined its Board of Trustees in 1952. The Fund's mission was to promote the principles set forth in the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights and the Constitution; as such it engaged in philanthropy and educational programs addressing issues relating to civil rights and civil liberties, including blacklisting, censorship and cultural freedom. In 1959 Fund for the Republic, Inc. established the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions, based in Santa Barbara, California. The series is organized into five sub-series: A. Correspondence, 1952-1959 B. Financial Records, 1953-1957, are periodic statements of the Fund's financial status. C. Organizational Records, 1950-1959, consists of board meeting minutes, annual reports and other official records. D. Activities, 1953-1960, consists primarily of records related to the Fund's grant funding operations and includes grant proposals and reviews. E. Printed Matter, 1949-1960 and n.d., comprises the bulk of this series and consists of copies of magazine and newspaper articles, television and radio transcripts, and other printed matter distributed to Fund board members for current awareness on issues relating to the Fund's mission. This sub-series also includes official Fund for the Republic newsletters, pamphlets and occasional publications, many of them in draft form.

Series 8, COMMITTEE ON THE NATIONAL SECURITY ORGANIZATION, 1948-1950, consists of minutes, reports and correspondence related to Cole's activity as a technical advisor in the social sciences. The Committee on the National Security Organization, also known as the Eberstadt Committee, formed part of the "Hoover Commission" (formally known as the Commission on the Organization of the Executive Branch of Government), headed by former President Herbert Hoover, which broadly examined the operation and organization of the executive functions and activities of the U.S. government. Cole served as adviser to the sub-committee on Social Sciences, headed by General Lewis B. Hershey, Director of Selective Service. The Committee on the NSO issued its report in January 1949. this series is not organized in any strict order, but folders headings are listed in this finding aid.

Series 14, KATHARINE COLE PAPERS, 1916-1964, are papers of Charles W. Cole's' first wife. It is organized into three sub-series: A. Letters and Diaries, 1916-1949, are typescript copies of Mrs. Cole's letters, edited by Charles W. Cole. Organized chronologically. B. Sojourn in Chile, 1961-1964, is Mrs. Cole's memoir and letters related to the Cole's' time in Chile when Mr. Cole served as U.S. Ambassador there. Mrs. Cole originally compiled the material in the late 1960s, apparently with the intention of being published, and Charles W. Cole edited the typescript posthumously. C. Records of the Bach Festival Society of Winter Park (Florida), 1948-1950, consists of three scrapbooks organized chronologically.
