Biographical Note

Marcus Kiley, a librarian and member of Amherst College Class of 1919, known as Mark to family and friends, was born in 1897 and grew up in Northampton, Mass. He graduated from Columbia University (BS in Library Science, 1927). Kiley was the assistant librarian of Amherst College, 1924-1929, and the Librarian of the University Club in New York City, 1929-1962. He retired in Amherst, Mass., and served as the secretary of his Amherst College Class of 1919 (from 1965 to1981), as well as secretary of the Amherst Historical Society, 1964-1968. Kiley married Ruth Butterworth in 1928. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. Mark Kiley died on May 5, 1981.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

These are the personal and business papers of Marcus Kiley. They include notes from his classes at the School of Library Service, Columbia University, 1926-1927, and papers and letters related to his involvement in various library organizations. Also included are letters, invitations and other printed matter related to reunions and dinners of the Amherst College Class of 1919 from the 1950s through the 1970s. There is a book of tributes to Kiley upon this retirement as the Librarian of the University Club, New York City in April 1962.
