Scope and Content Note

The Glenn Dillard Gunn Collection consists primarily of Correspondence, Photographs, and Music. The range of dates represented in the collection is 1874-1961.

Worthy of note in the collection are letters from correspondents such as Ferruccio Busoni, Teresa Carreño, Percy Grainger, and Moriz Rosenthal. There are also numerous photographs with autograph inscriptions to the Gunns, including those of Claude Debussy, Victor Herbert, and John McCormack. The sizable collection of printed music includes a number of autographed presentation scores, such as Eric Delamarter's Suite from The Black Orchid and Symphony no. 3, and Moriz Rosenthal's Zehn CharakterStücke. The manuscript music in Gunn's own hand consists of an arrangement of J. S. Bach's English Suite no. 3 for winds and a transcription of a Bach keyboard concerto for three pianos. A manuscript of several songs from the Gitanjali cycle by John Alden Carpenter, though in the hand of a copyist, does include Carpenter's own pencilled indications of orchestration.

The remainder of the collection consists of miscellaneous personal papers, programs and clippings.
