Gannett was a journalist and author. For many years he wrote the daily book review column for the New York Herald Tribune.

Correspondence on topics such as publishing books, a letter from John Merrick Hollister on difficulties arising from a novel Hollister wrote on Walt Disney, US politics, and a letter about Chicago.
