545 |aHans Anscar Reinhold was born in Hamburg, Germany on 1897 September 9. His parents placed great import on a good education and put effort into finding a good school for their children. Consequently, their son attended a public school with Lutheran affiliations, rather than the local private Catholic school. After discovering an interest in languages, history, art, and architecture, Reinhold's indifference to his early education turned to hard work and success. During World War I Reinhold served on the Russian front and in army intelligence translating English and French codes.

561 |aProvenanceThe bulk of this collection was acquired through a gift from Dan Kane sometime after 1985 August 15. Dan Kane, a close friend of H.A. Reinhold, tried unsuccessfully to get a collected works of Reinhold's published. As a result of this failed endeavor, Dan Kane acquired manuscripts and drafts of books, articles, and letters, among other writings by Reinhold, which, once the publication of this collection of writings never materialized, Reinhold asked him to keep for the future. A friendly relationship with Boston College led Kane to donate H.A. Reinhold's papers to the Burns Library.
