BIOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL NOTEThe Bettle family were prominent 19th century Quaker merchants in Philadelphia. Samuel Bettle, Sr., was Clerk of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting at the time of the Separation in 1827. His son, Samuel Bettle, Jr., was also a Quaker minister. Samuel Bettle, son of Samuel and Sarah of Philadelphia, married Jane Temple, daughter of Thomas and Jane Temple, in 1802 at Kennett Meeting House. The Bettle family were active members of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting for the Western District (Orthodox). Samuel Bettle, Sr., was in the mercantile business, d.4-12-1861, age 87. Jane Bettle d.1840, age 67. Both Samuel and Jane were ministering Friends. Their son Samuel, Jr., (b.10-21-1809, d.1-11-1883) married 11-30-1831 Mary Ann Jones, d.1-11-1883. Children: Mary, b.11-30-1833, d.10-21-1912. (She and her parents were ministering Friends); Samuel, d.5-14-1859, age 23; Edward, b.12-17-1841; Henry, b.1-30-1843, d.1-30-1886. 2 children died in infancy.
