BIOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL NOTE

The Committee on the Organization of Friends in the Washington Metropolitan Area was formed in 1966 to address concerns regarding the organizational structure of Quakerism in the Washington, D.C., area. Members active in the various preparative meetings and monthly meetings experienced overlapping responsibilities and redundant activities. From the recommendations proposed by the Committee, the Friends Council of the National Capital Area was established on November 9, 1966, to coordinate the efforts and resources of Friends, specifically in the areas of community outreach, administrative services, services to groups within the membership, and contact with other organizations. Friends Council held its first meeting February 20, 1967. This group was laid down when it in turn established the National Capital Area Association of Friends (NCAAF) on September 25, 1971. The larger NCAAF continued the work of the Friends Council.
