BIOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL NOTE

Founded in 1867 and incorporated in 1877, the Ladies Art Association of New York worked to promote the interests of women artists. At first the members met monthly. In 1872 the Association entered the field of education by offering art industrial training to teachers. In 1881 it established an art studio for women. While not a Quaker organization, many of its members and officers were Friends. These included Alice Donlevy, E.C. Fields, Gulielma Fields, Margarita Willets Harrison, and Jane Russell.
