BIOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL NOTE

The Friends' Indian Aid Association was organized in 1869 by members of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Hicksite). The stated objective was to solicit voluntary donations of money and goods to distribute to the Indian tribes assigned to the care of the Yearly Meeting.

Many of its members were also members of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Hicksite) Indian Committee. Mary Jeanes was the first President of the Indian Aid Association, and Emily H. Atkinson was appointed Treasurer. When the latter resigned in the 12mo 1869, John Saunders assumed the position. The Association continued to supply food, clothing, sanitary stores, books, etc., donated by individuals and meetings until at least 1876.
