BIOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL NOTEThe Friends' Indian Aid Association was organized in 1869 by members of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Hicksite). The stated objective was to solicit voluntary donations of money and goods to distribute to the Indian tribes assigned to the care of the Yearly Meeting. Many of its members were also members of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Hicksite) Indian Committee. Mary Jeanes was the first President of the Indian Aid Association, and Emily H. Atkinson was appointed Treasurer. When the latter resigned in the 12mo 1869, John Saunders assumed the position. The Association continued to supply food, clothing, sanitary stores, books, etc., donated by individuals and meetings until at least 1876. Correspondence, 1869-1975This series consists of letters to the committee listing gifts of clothing, seeds, etc., letters from Indian children thanking them for these gifts and other miscellaneous correspondence, all arranged chronologically.
Ser. 2. Lists of Goods, 1869-1974This series consists of lists of goods sent to the Indian, Agencies by the Indian Aid Association, of goods sent to the Association by individuals and other Indian Aid Associations, and a list of winter garments on hand in the Indian Agencies. Many of these lists are undated; the rest are arranged chronologically.
Ser. 3. Reports and Minutes, 1869-1975This series consists of Reports to the Central Committee of the Indian Aid Associations and extracts from the minutes of the Indian Aid Association of Philadelphia, arranged chronologically.
Ser. 4. Treasurer's Reports, 1869-1975This series consists of the reports of John Saunders as Treasurer of the Association, listing gifts and expenditures of the Association. The reports are arranged chronologically.
Ser. 5. Bills and Receipts, 1869-1975This series consists of bills and receipts for goods arranged chronologically.
Ser. 6. Printed Documents, 1870-1876This series consists of the Annual Reports of the Friends Indian Aid Association and a report from the Committee on Indian Affairs of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting calling for the formation of a Central Committee of the Indian Aid Associations of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. The documents are arranged chronologically.
